Forge a Knife
This is a one day knife-making course designed for both beginners and those who have already given blacksmithing a go. Our expert team will guide and support you through each process in the design and forging of your own unique knife.
Set in beautiful rural countryside our forge is located at Garway Hill in Herefordshire. We run weekend knife-making courses all year round, where your knife will emerge from an initial chunk of steel into a final heat-treated, handled and finished blade.
Discover the fundamentals of knife-making and learn the traditional techniques involved. Whilst your blade is annealing you can enjoy lunch either in the open air in our picnic area or, if you prefer, take advantage of our Scandinavian lodge or Shepherds hut. We do welcome family and friends to join you for lunch and to share in your experience as a blacksmith.
This is very much a “hands-on” day that will enable you to craft your very own blade. You will be given an initial health and safety briefing and also an introduction to the machinery in our workshop. We then take you through some basic blacksmithing techniques before teaching you how to forge a knife – which, when finished, would be suitable to be either used (with care) or displayed (with pride).
With one of our team of experts overseeing your work, you will be carefully guided through the process of hand forging and polishing your knife.
The types of knife you can design and forge with us include:-
Kitchen knife Hunting knife
Bush craft knife Re-enactment knife
Fishing knife Woodwork tool …..... to name just a few
This is a fantastic 6 hours of fun, taught in a relaxed and friendly environment, where you will be made to sweat but will leave at the end of the day with a blade that you will cherish forever - along with a special story to be told.
This experience day is essentially for over 18's. However 16 and 17 year olds are very welcome if accompanied by an adult.
