This experience is perfect for complete beginners, axe makers, bushcraft enthusiasts, campers, outdoor adventurers and anyone interested in learning traditional leatherworking skills.

No previous leathercraft experience is required. Your instructor will guide you through every stage of the process, making it an enjoyable and rewarding experience whether you’re creating your very first leather project or expanding your existing skills.

Participants must be 16 years or over, or 7 years and over when accompanied by a participating adult.

After a warm welcome and introduction to the workshop, you’ll be introduced to the leatherworking tools, materials and techniques used throughout the day. Under the guidance of your instructor, you’ll measure your axe, create a custom pattern, cut the leather, punch stitching holes, saddle stitch the sheath by hand and apply the finishing touches to produce a durable, professional-quality result.

Every stage is demonstrated before you complete it yourself, allowing you to build confidence while learning authentic leatherworking techniques. By the end of the experience, you’ll have transformed a piece of premium leather into a bespoke axe sheath that’s both practical and built to last.

Our Axe Sheath Making Package is a full day (approximately 1 day) hands on leatherworking workshop where you’ll create a bespoke leather sheath designed specifically to fit your axe. Guided by one of our experienced leatherworkers, you’ll learn traditional leathercraft techniques including measuring, pattern making, cutting, punching, saddle stitching and finishing.

A quality leather sheath not only protects your axe during storage and transport but also adds the perfect finishing touch to a handcrafted tool. Whether you’ve forged your axe at Oldfield Forge or already own a favourite, this experience allows you to create a durable, professional-quality sheath that’s made to fit your axe perfectly. By the end of the day, you’ll leave with a handcrafted leather sheath you’ll be proud to use for years to come, along with valuable new leatherworking skills.

Please wear comfortable clothing suitable for a workshop environment and sturdy, closed toe footwear

If you’re creating a sheath for an existing axe, please bring your axe with you so your sheath can be custom fitted.

We’ll provide everything else, including all leather, tools, materials and protective equipment required throughout the day.
